DENVER — The official name for the Spurs’ group in this season’s NBA Emirates Cup was “West Group C.”
Throughout the league, it became known colloquially as “The Group of Death.”
Denver. Houston. Portland. Golden State.
Thanks to Friday’s 139-136 come-from-behind victory over the Nuggets, the Spurs emerged on top of them all.
Devin Vassell pumped in a season-high 35 points, Julian Champagnie had 25 to go with 11 rebounds as the Spurs advanced to the knockout rounds of the NBA Cup for the first time in history.
The Spurs will go on the road to face the Los Angeles Lakers in a Dec. 10 quarterfinal matchup.
To get there, the Spurs fought back from an 18-point deficit in the second half Friday to stun the Nuggets in the final 1:40.
Vassell had 10 of his points in that span, including back-to-back 3-pointers to give the Spurs a six-point lead in the final minute.
Jamal Murray scored 37 to lead the Nuggets, who also got 28 points from Cam Johnson and 21 points, 10 assists and nine rebounds from Nikola Jokic.
Had Denver won, the club would have moved on to the knockout rounds for the first time as well.
Instead, Vassell helped deliver the Spurs the “Group of Death” title.
Here are three takeaways from Friday’s victory, which improved the Spurs to 13-5:
1. Call Vassell the new “Captain Clutch”
Vassell came up big for the second game in a row, following a 23-point night at Portland with Friday’s detonation.
Eighteen of his points came in the fourth quarter, including two of the biggest shots of the game.
De’Aaron Fox has been the team’s top closer since he joined the club. Friday, it was Vassell who brought the game home.
The Spurs had gone four consecutive possessions without a basket late in the fourth. Three of those misfires belonged to Fox.
Vassell broke a 126-126 deadlock with a 3-pointer with 1:25 to play. One possession later, he swished another to give the Spurs a 132-126 edge with 51.6 to go.
Both came on plays designed to get the ball to their hottest shooter.
Vassell’s role shifts when the Spurs are at full strength. As long as they are not, look for him to remain aggressive in the scoring department.

2. The Spurs dug deep for this one
In a way, the NBA schedule makers set the Spurs up to fail Friday.
The Nuggets had not played since a Monday night victory at Memphis. The Spurs played two nights earlier in Portland, and did not arrive in the Mile High City until Thanksgiving afternoon.
It was an odd set-up for an NBA Cup elimination game.
Facing the Nuggets with that sort of rest disparity was already going to be a tough ask, especially in a game played at altitude.
The Spurs had to dig deep to win a fourth-quarter game, putting the victory in the conversation for one of the team’s best of the season.
The Nuggets were heavy favorites for a reason. Give the Spurs credit for not letting the schedule disadvantage get to them.
3. Wings get into the rebounding act
With Wembanyama out, most nights will be a rebounding adventure for the Spurs.
Two wings are helping the Spurs not get annihilated in that department.
Champagnie posted his third consecutive rebounds-points double-double, after coming into the season with only one in his career.
Keldon Johnson collected eight boards to go with 14 points, narrowly missing his second straight double-double.
The bigger Nuggets outrebounded the Spurs 44-35. Champagnie and Johnson at least gave the Spurs a fighting chance on the boards.
